TLC's Nanny Search

1. TLC will recruit and advertise to find you a nanny.

TLC's ongoing recruiting program is always in motion. Since we have been matching nannies with families since 1985, we may already have your ideal caregiver in our extensive pool of qualified nannies. TLC also runs ads specific to your family's needs when necessary.

Minimum caregiver requirements:

  • Experience in the child care field with references
  • 18 years or older with high school diploma
  • An insured car for transportation
2. Caregivers complete a detailed application

Application covers:

  • Work experience (referenced)
  • Permanent child care jobs (employment)
  • Temporary babysitting jobs
  • Non child care jobs
  • Education
  • Personality description
  • Personal and health summary
  • Child care questionnaire
  • Caregiver location
  • Type of position desired
  • Hours and salary desired
  • Work and character references

3. TLC will personally interview all candidates. Personal and professional issues are covered.

  • Assess caregiver's basic knowledge of child care skills
  • Discuss caregiver's child care philosophy
  • Review past child care related job experience
  • Discuss current and future employment goals

4. TLC will screen candidates.

  • Check at least three child care references
  • Verify employment and education (college)
  • Local police record check (St. Louis city  & county)
  • Provide CPR Training**
  • Abuse and neglect check for State of Missouri **
  • Other background checks**

** Completion may take up to 6 weeks.

5. TLC will provide you with candidates' portfolios.

Please review information as soon as possible and contact them to set up interviews. Good caregivers are in huge demand! If you 'sit' on an application you may lose out on a  super nanny.
Further background checks may be ordered at the time of hire.


Please review the following TLC step-by-step process before submitting the parent application.

Initial Paperwork

1. Complete Parent application form.
Please be as detailed as possible so that TLC can send you candidates that meet your specific needs and qualifications.

2. Review and sign TLC contract. It is important that you understand our agreement.

3. Prepare a written job description. Please include the job description in your application

4. Send TLC completed paperwork and $150 non-refundable application fee ($200 for live-in) to:

5. Meet with a TLC representative.

We feel it is important that we meet with you face to face before we begin our search. We will discuss your children and their needs, your application, and our procedures.We will also review information and provide practical paperwork on becoming a household employer including interviewing, tax considerations, salary and benefits, employment contracts and guidance on how to maintain a lasting and positive relationship with your nanny.

Selecting and Hiring

1. Interview candidates in your home.
We will provide you with interviewing questions to help  you through the process. If you are interested in someone, let them know.  Schedule a second meeting to spend time with the child(ren).

2. Make an offer to a candidate.

3. Negotiate salary and benefits.
Average salary is between $300 and $500 per week for full time and $8-$12 per hour for part time. Benefits typically include at least one week of paid vacation, 2-3 paid sick or personal days, and perhaps a percentage of health insurance.  Extra week-end sitting is between $8 and $10 per hour or $100 per day for overnight care when you travel.

4. Complete "intent to hire" form for additional background checks.

5. Complete employment contract. TLC provides a bare bones contract for your use.

6. Deliver fee & contract to TLC. Payment and contract must be delivered to TLC before the nanny may begin.

TLC Fee Schedule:

  • Full time Live-In/Live-out - 10% of nanny's annual gross salary; minimum of $1500
  • Part time Nanny (under 35 hrs). - 10% of nanny's annual gross salary; minimum of $1000
  • After School Care - 10% of nanny's annual gross salary; minimum of $1000
  • Mommy Nanny (Nanny who brings her child to work) - 7% of nanny's gross annual salary; minimum of $1000
  • Summer - $450

Probationary Period

The first 10 weeks (2 weeks for summer) are considered a probationary period. During this time, if the nanny or the family is dissatisfied, TLC will continue the search to find a suitable match or we will credit your account 50% of the placement fee toward a future nanny search or toward other services.

The entire process should take between 4 and 6 weeks.  You are not obligated to hire any caregiver sent to you.
