Another solution for short-term care is TLC for Kids, an in-home child-care service in University City that has operated here since 1985. TLC for Kids specializes in placing nannies and providing care for sick children, as well as a new service for newborns called doulas, in which an aide from TLC helps the new mother get started with her newborn. Its staff, comprising students, young adults and parents wanting part-time work, numbers between 70 and 100.
Demand seems to be strong -- and growing, as more parents learn by word-of-mouth of the service. TLC for Kids registers about 40 new clients a month, said Stephanie Graff-Yaffee, TLC's vice president, who co-founded the organization with her sister in 1985.
